WHAT TO WEAR GUIDE

My philosophy is that you want to feel like yourself when picking your outfits for your session. Feeling comfortable and confident is so important, and we want the photos to be about you, not what you are wearing. If you are a tank top and ripped jeans sort of person, now is not the time to pull out the ballgown. If you are a full on fashionista, let’s see that style!  If you never wear hats, don’t think you need one just to be trendy. Ultimately you want to feel like you!

During our shoot, we will have time for two outfits. I recommend both of you bringing a few options. I will help you pick and choose what might work best. I am by no means an expert stylist, but I have found what typically photographs best.

I typically say having one casual, and one a bit more dressy is a good way to go. Dressy does not have to mean a suite and tie. A nice cardigan or blazer over a undershirt for the guys is a great way to dress up a second look without going to formal.

Below are some guidelines to help you out if you are not quite sure what to wear! These are by no means rules, just what I have found photographs best!

MATCH YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Think about our location and the general vibe you are going for.  If we are shooting somewhere with grand architecture, and you like more of a high fashion look, than a suit and cocktail dress are perfect! If we on a mountain top, then a big cozy sweater and a beanie is perfect!

COLORS

I typically recommend pastel or neutral colors. This doesn’t mean grey, beige and brown. What I mean by neutral is earth tones, such as mustard yellow, forest green, burnt orange, or sky blue. Mainly staying away from vibrant or fluorescent reds, oranges, and yellows. If you love red, it can certainly work,  however it is the main thing that your eye will be drawn to in every photo, so keep that in mind. I recommend a burgundy over a bright red.

PATTERNS

Patterns can works beautifully when done right! I’m always a fan of flannels! They are timeless, and most guys feel like themselves in them.  I typically recommend smaller more subdue patterns that do not draw two much attention from your faces.

Movement.jpg

MOVEMENT

You want to be able to move and feel comfortable in your outfit. I typically say to avoid tight short dresses as many poses don’t work as great in them. You also want to make sure your bra strap and girls are all in place. If you feel worried about re-positioning your outfit, you won’t be able to fully get into having fun with the shoot!

Incorporating fabrics that move is always a huge plus! When the wind blows or I have you twirl and dance, that dress flowing in the wind can be absolutely gorgeous!

ACCESSORIES

I’m a huge fan of accessories. Hats, scarves, jackets, sunglasses, necklaces….They can be mixed and matched throughout the shoot to create interest and different looks. They can also always be removed if you’re not feeling it! Stay away from watches, they can be distracting if your hands are by your face.

PROPS

Props can bring so much to the session. Using props doesn’t necessarily mean all the things you see on Pinterest.  Props can mean a boat, vintage car, beach cruiser, campfire, surfboard, your dog, really anything that creates a scene. They can add so much “vibe” to your session. A nice cozy blanket, guitar and bottle of wine can set the scene as well. It's never a bad idea for the two of you to have a glass before the session too!

Some of my favorite props:

·      A cute beach cruiser ·      Surfboard/skateboard/roller skates

·      A motorcycle or cool car

·      A guitar or musical instrument
